Carbon Tax

How do we really feel?

Yes, this is a hot topic for many Canadians and so many unanswered questions to go along with it. The winter edition of The Taxpayer from The Canadian Taxpayers Federation group held a very informative article that I have borrowed a list of quick points from and I’m also including a link to the entire newsletter edition. I would consider this a recommended read for all Canadians who do care about our great country!

As a preamble… for me it’s not about a “save the planet” ideal… of course we all want that. It’s more about whether this carbon tax strategy is a well-thought-out and effective approach and ultimately is the tremendous financial sacrifice all Canadians will be living with going to have a global effect anyway?

Carbon Tax Quick Points

  • Based on 2019 legislation Carbon tax will increase from $20 per Metric Ton of Co2 to $170 in 2030 - a +10.73% increase per year(see pricing chart below)

  • 69% of Canadians are opposed to the Trudeau government hiking the carbon tax

  • 11% of Canadians want it lowered, 22% want it frozen

  • Conservatives are heavily campaigning for scrapping the tax and the party is up in the polls because of it.

  • 8 out of 10 Provincial Premiers were against the latest increase in April 2024

“A tax on the very basic necessities of life, like heating your home and driving your vehicle, is immoral. And we can never forget this point. Maybe they wouldn’t be such a necessity if we didn’t live in one of the coldest, largest countries in the world. But we do.”
